Walking with God

Personal relationship with Jesus

I recently googled scriptures that talk about a personal relationship with God. To my surprise, one site said there are no scriptures stating God wants a personal relationship with His people. I will admit the exact words, “God wants a personal relationship with us” is not found in Scripture but the Bible is full of examples of God showing His desire to be close to us.

From the beginning we see this:

Genesis 3:8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day.

In this verse we see God taking time to go to the garden of Eden to walk and visit with Adam and Eve.

If God doesn’t want to have a personal relationship with us why does He know the very details of our life?

Psalm 139:1 O LORD, you have searched me and you know me. 2 You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. 3 You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.4 Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD. 5 You hem me in--behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain. 7 Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? 8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. 9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, 10 even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. 11 If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me," 12 even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.

Matthew 10:30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

However, here’s the big thing--if He didn’t desire to have a personal relationship with us why did He send His one and only Son Jesus to die on the cross?

John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Notice both scriptures speak of God’s love for us while we were still sinners. Our sin separated us from Him and we were on our way to hell, but He loved us so much He sent Jesus to take the punishment for our sins because He did not want us to perish.

So, does God want a close relationship with us….YES! Know this about God, in His eyes you are not a face in the crowd, you’re not a social security number, He knows you by name, He knows everything about you and He wants to get as close to you as you will allow Him.
