Do I need to go to church?

group worship at church

The question asked by many Christians today is “do I need to go to church?” It isn’t a question that needs to be asked because Hebrews 10:25 says, “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” This scripture says we are to meet together and we are to attend church services. Notice the last part of that verse says we should meet even more as the coming of the Lord gets closer.

Since scripture answered that question the next question that many ask is, “can I just stay home and get church from television?” Let’s look at Acts 2:42-47:

“They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.”

Notice what the church did together as a unit. They worshipped together, fellowshipped, ate together, ministered together. After reading these scriptures I’m not sure how a person can stay home and watch church and be able to accomplish what the church was called to do. I have this question for those who think this is ok, “When do you minister?” because we are all called to do the work of the Lord. 1 Corinthians 15:58:

“Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.”

Here’s another question, “when do you witness” and if you do witness and someone comes to the Lord, how are they going to grow in Christ if they follow your example and watch it on television? It was Jesus who came up with the church. He did so that we could grow together, lean on one another to bring the world to Him. So, what should do? If you are obedient to scripture you will go to church faithfully.
